Don Bell
Don Bell Is best known in the local Jazz circles as “Saxophonist Extraordinaire” for his smooth and melodic, yet electrifying and explosive style of performing. The source of Don’s appeal is his ability to make us feel what he feels while playing a song; whether it’s the powerful, heart thumping beats of his up-tempo tunes or the irresistibly soulful sounds of his slower, jazzy emotions. Don’s brand of music fits in well with the Smooth Jazz or Wave format. Many people have said that to see and hear Don “The One” Bell perform onstage is an unforgettable experience. He is, in the truest sense, the all around performer by interacting with his audience and engaging them in conversation in between songs.
He is known for stepping offstage during a song and walking through his audience, playing to each table as if they were the only people in the room. Throughout any performance, Don will pick up any of his three saxophones – tenor, alto or soprano, playing each one beautifully, with the same intensity, no matter what the style of music.
Don had early influences in jazz, listening to John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie, and later, to a variety of such well-known artists as James Brown, Grover Washington, Jr., Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, The Gap Band and Marvin Gaye. Within this vast array of various musical interests, Don developed a multifaceted style of writing, composing and producing songs, which include Jazz, R&B, Pop, Hip-Hop, Rap and Gospel.
Over the years Don has had the opportunity to perform with Joe Sample, Less McCann, Bobbie Womack, The Gap Band, The Platters and Ike Turner. Don’s most recent performance has been on the ever popular show “Sex in the City” where he is the featured sax soloist on the theme song.
Now, with his much anticipated CD release, which is written, arranged and produced by Don “The One” Bell, it will no doubt please audiences worldwide!

His first solo efforts, Blue City Jam (1984) and Night Theme (1987) captured the funky, urban flavored vibe of the Quiet Storm format just before the advent of smooth jazz, and Faces (1988) and the similarly styled In Focus (1991) rose high on Billboard’s contemporary jazz charts and continue to receive international airplay. After a few colorful excursions into swing and straight-ahead (Live All Night Long - 1994, Cat’s Pajamas - 1996, Passion - 1998) all recorded live, Mitchell returns to the smooth jazz fold with his PRC 2001 release, Never Give Up On Love, a soulful and dynamic session which combines Mitchell’s love for jammin’ R&B funk with a keen sense of romance and grace. Born in Tarrytown and raised in Buffalo, New York, Billy Mitchell tinkered with the piano as a child but did not get serious about music until he entered Morehouse College. While pursuing a political science degree he joined the school jazz band and was soon playing gigs in and around Atlanta. In 1970 Mitchell moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career and was soon backing up such artists as Gloria Lynn, Ester Phillips, Randy Crawford and Linda Hopkins, to name a few. The Billy Mitchell Group has appeared at many international festivals including the Monterey Jazz Festival, Playboy Jazz Festival, Heineken World Music Festival, International Jazz Festival, Pori Jazz Festival, Sedona Jazz on the Rocks, and countless club appearances. His solo career has included appearances in film, most notably Clint Eastwood's "Bird." In 1999 America West Airlines awarded Mitchell the Jazz For The Next Generation Award for his continued work with young musicians. His work as a clinician has centered on his book, "The Gigging Musician" (Backbeat Books) based on interviews and his articles as a writer for Gig Magazine. In 2002 Billy founded The Scholarship Audition Performance Preparatory Academy. This program is designed to increase participation of inner-city students in music and arts scholarship competitions. SAPPA works to develop the students' artistic and creative aptitude, ability, desire and skills toward the ultimate goal of applying for and winning arts competitions.

Robert at electric pianoRobert Turner is a pianist from Los Angeles, California with a fresh new sound! His sound has a mind of its own, which has a hint of Erroll Garner, Gene Harris and Geri Allen, combined with his own unique flavor. Robert has studied piano at Los Angeles City College and Yamaha School of Music in Nagoya, Japan. He is well versed on the organ, keyboards and many styles of today and yesterday's music. At age sixteen Robert began playing piano and has excelled to a genius level style of playing! Which has allowed him to perform with great artists like Stevie Wonder, Ronnie Laws, Kevin Toney, UnWrapped All-stars, Byron Miller, Ron Brown, Lose Ends, Stokly of Mint Condition, Deborah Cox, Nysa Shenay, Jon B, Chico DeBarge and Dr. Dre. Robert can draw large numbers of people and keep their interest. He can play stride piano, solo piano, and can bring exceptional dynamics to a group. He also likes to take the tunes different places and change the harmony to bring different moods, creating a new sound that inspires all!
The new "Solo" CD done by Turner, will be on sale in late fall. This album is a solo piano record with traditional jazz standards like "Body and Soul", "Let's Cool One", and an original song called "RT's Blues". Robert has stated, "I have received a lot of good responses from the CD. I know it will do really well".
"Body and Soul" is played freely with intense substitute chord changes to bring an intriguing sound. After the melody is played, the solo section builds and builds to a depth-defying crescendo! "RT's Blues" is played with a stride piano style along with a whole tone based concept and stretches out on a twelve bar blues progression. He is also working on a new project called "Solo Volume 2 + More".

Francis Sabado
The JazzZone supports the Sabado Studio of Music
By Francis Sabado
Purpose: In the city of Chino Hills, there is a music studio that raises the limits of Education, Musicianship, and Performance for the community and for the young students in elementary, middle, and high school. Each student is challenged equally and significantly in all 3 major areas and becomes well adjusted to his or her strengths. This could include anything from individual instrumentation, sight-reading or sight-singing, to song -writing or music arrangement or orchestration, to usage of microphones on-stage to completing a 45 minute singing-set while keeping the audience entertained.
Keeping these thoughts in mind, the studio has formed 2 basic foundations that are missing in traditional private instrumental teaching and public music forums provided by the unified school districts. This is to (1) begin music training on the piano, and to (2) find the right instrument with the right complimenting strengths suited to that student’s ability. For some reason, picking an instrument to fulfill the needs of the band or orchestra, or for an individual to simply apply themselves to an instrument previously played by a parent or sibling, is how choices are made.
Mayseo
MagicalConservatory The greatest trick of all for Mayseo, of course, is his M.C. quality. His bright personality and warm heart shine upon the stage unhidden from the audience. There is something mystical about a Mayseo performance. His cabaret effects visually and emotionally draw his audience into the fantasy he creates, holding the audience on the edge of their seats. You are in for an entertaining treat. Mayseo, The Great has traveled the world over and has returned with a "bag full of tricks" from Japan, the Philippines and New Zealand to mention a few. Mayseo the Great, well known as William Mays, is the Founder and Director of the Magical Conservatory. An Internationally acclaimed illusionist, Mr. Mays holds degrees in Psychology and Child Development. He knows that when children take magic classes, it builds self-esteem, discipline and individuality. Mayseo is an instructor for All About Kids, a performing arts conservatory, and the Kedren Community Center after school program. Mayseo the magician knows all the elements to help make children magical. MagicalConservatory@hotmail.com 310-967-5734 http://magicalconservatory.homestead.com/

Cheri Anderson
"Smooth, Smoky, Silky Jazz Vocalist"
It has been an adventure "living" the music I am! Looking at the picture of me from the seventies where I started singing professionally takes me back to my college days when I performed with Funk-a-fied Band and Show! Those were some wild and crazy days! We were a thirteen piece band and I was the only female in the group! We opened for some icons though! Earth, Wind, and Fire; Tavares; The Jimmy Castor Bunch; Donald Byrd and the Blackbyrds to name a few. Good times, great memories! Funk-a-fied produced artists such as Reggie Calloway of Midnight Star. We stay in touch today. Good people! "Smooth, Smoky, Silky Jazz Vocalist"
The eighties was a time of studying my craft. I went to Boston, MA where I enrolled in the Elma Lewis School of Performing Arts and studied under Elma herself who gave me tidbits of wisdom, not only about the business, but who I am as an Artist. From there I journeyed to my home town, Cincinnati, OH where I studied at the Music Center and at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. I also studied with Eugene Goss, a Voice Coach renowned for his work with Phyllis Hyman...coincidence, I think not! Who knew I'd be meeting this lovely lady and performing her music?! The Universe sure has a sense of humor! NOW IN THE SAN FRANCISCO/BAY AREA!
Cheri “Note” Anderson is a silky smooth singer/songwriter who artfully blends classic Jazz, contemporary Jazz, and R & B, with lyrics that are rooted in love. Her unique style, she has coined as “Jazzin’ the Spirit”, is a fusion of Jazz and inspirational music.
Each song, be it original or standard, is belted with the smoothness of Nancy Wilson and the huskiness of Phyllis Hyman, in a range that reaches five octaves! Her music has been described as rich, rhythmic, sassy, and enlightening.
Cheri is a former member of Funk-a-fied (later became known as Midnight Star) and has opened for Nancy Wilson, Maxi Priest, Phil Perry, and E.W.F. Patrice Rushen produced earlier projects. She has also performed with Benny Maupin of "Head Hunters" fame, and has jammed with Roy Ayers, Jennifer Lewis, and Billy Mitchell.
Cheri has performed on radio, television, and in corporate board rooms. Her mission is to inspire people in thinking more positively about life, living their lives fully, and being "in love" with the blessings of life. Her passion is sharing this through music. Her latest CD "Jazzin' the Spirit" is played on Unity Radio, Positive Music Radio, ITunes, and Myspace.
Cheri is part of the Positive Music Movement, a new expression that features inspirational lyrics with all genres of music. She has introduced contemporary Jazz to this new expression, putting her mark on the movement with funky beats, rhythmic sounds, and soulful riffs pioneering an eclectic blend of inspirational lyrics with stirring background music that moves the listener.
She is engaged in launching her newest project "Jazzin' the Spirit Positive Music Movement" a concert/showcasing event that features independent and aspiring artists! Her company, Cheri Note Productions has produced this event and has created a "buzz" in the Southern California community! She recenly relocated to the San Francisco/Bay Area where she will continue to bring the Positive Music Movement and Jazzin' the Spirit!

Chester Whitmore
Chester Whitmore Dancer, composer, comedian, actor, choreographer, stuntman, bandleader etc. - a multi-talented teacher that continues to surprise you. He started out as a tap dancer in 1974 and for many years he was a protégé of the famous tap legend John Bubbles. He has been teaching among others at the Alvin Aley dance school and lecturing at the renowned Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. Chester Whitmore has his own well-reputed dance company, Black Ballet Jazz specialized in Afro-American vernacular dance. Mr Whitmore is an outstanding teacher & performer, whose knowledge of tap and vernacular jazz is endless. That is the reason why he has become an important part of The Jammin Foundation
THE OPUS ONE BIG BAND, http://shandalear.com/1.htm led by Chester Whitmore, is an 18-piece orchestra recreating the hot Big Band and jazz sounds from the 1920s to the 1940s. Their material includes many popular tunes from the Cotton Club and the Savoy Ballroom, with musical sources such as Duke Ellington, Jimmy Lunceford, Count Basie, Chick Webb and Cab Calloway.
Like their idols from the old swing era, this is not a sedate, nice dinner crowd Big Band. Opus One does not make appearances dripping with sentimental grease and political correctness --Opus One is unleashed! Known for a usually, shall we say -- flamboyant, stage show, these musicians will play wild solos, compete for your attention, prance around on stage, parade on the dance floor -- and, on occasion, even place their leader in a guillotine.
Dancing since 1974, Chester Whitmore originally studied to be a cinematographer. An encounter with famed tap dancer Fayard Nicholas changed his life. Eventually, Mr. Nicholas became his teacher and mentor.
Mr. Whitmore has been jumping ever since, he has traveled around the world on tour as dancer, teacher, choreographer, director and entertainer. He and his dance company, Black Ballet Jazz, have performed with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra under the direction of Mercer Ellington, the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Frank Foster and the great Miles Davis. The summer of 1999 sent him touring through Canada and Europe with the Smithsonian Masterworks Jazz Orchestra in a tribute to Duke Ellington.
Chester Whitmore's choreography can be seen in music videos by Weird Al Yankovic, Tina Marie, Boys 2 Men, and most recently, Sugar Ray.
The NAACP Image Awards (1989-1994), Soul of American Music, and Stellar Awards (Gospel Music Awards) show Mr. Whitmore’s versatility in choreographing for diverse groups, such as the Nicholas Brothers with Savion Glover, M.C. Hammer, Lavert, Bebe and Cece Winans, Vickie Winans and dance tributes to Dick Clark and The Artist (formerly known as Prince).
Teaching assignments included Herrang (Sweden), and dance performances, Salzburg (Austria), the San Francisco Jazz Festival (1997), the Monterey Jazz Festival (1996), performing with veteran jazz greats Jon Hendricks and Joe Williams.
Mr. Whitmore is actively involved in projects reaching young people through Los Angeles Cultural Affairs events as performer or as teacher for the Parks and Recreation Division, African Marketplace, The Jammin Foundation and in schools and universities throughout the U.S. Chester Whitmore has taught almost everyone who has made a name in the swing scene. The summer of 1999 sent him touring through Canada and Europe with the Smithsonian Masterworks Jazz Orchestra in a tribute to Duke Ellington.
